Last season Mount Pleasant pulled off an improbable 17-7 win over Marshall in spite of the fact that the Mavericks went on to advance to the area round of the playoffs while the TIgers failed to make the post-season.
The Tigers dominated the Mavs in 2023, mostly along their defensive line on a night in which the Marshall offense was out of sorts all night long.
Marshall had no interest in a repeat performance and was determined to exact some revenge in this season's district 7-5A opener.
Mount Pleasant was coming off a shocking win over Whitehouse last week, while the Mavs had the week off.
The first quarter was littered with penalties for the Mavs as two apparent scores were negated by flags. The opening kickoff for a 99 yard TD return was erased by a holding call. Another touchdown was taken off the board after an illegal block.
The Mavs finally hit paydirt late in the second quarter as the Mavs found the endzone for a 8-0 lead with 4:28 left in the half.
Seconds later....Mount Pleasant failed to cover the kickoff and Marshall recovered the ball at the Tiger 48 yardline.
A 25 yard pass from Alton Henderson to Raijon Sims put the Mavs up 15-0 at the break.
In the third quarter another MP fumble set Marshall up for a score as the Mavs took a commanding 22-0 lead.
The offense found the endzone again early in the fourth for a 29-0 lead, allowing the Mav bench to finish out the game.
The Tigers got a late touchdown to make it 29-7 before Marshall would run out the rest of the clock.
QB Alton Henderson was 8-14 for 120 yards with 2 touchdown passes.
RB Isaiah Bush had 115 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
RB Semaj Gatson had 109 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.
WRs Raijon Sims and Judson Illingworth each had touchdown catches
Marshall finished the game with 238 yards rushing and 120 passing for a total of 358 yards.
