Mav Defense Shines in 35-0 Shutout of Jacksonville

The Maverick defense was on fire Friday night as they completely shut down the Jacksonville Indians in a 35-0 victory on the team's annual Pink Out game.

With the Mav offense struggling early in the contest, Marshall used a stingy defense to keep the upset-minded tribe from garnering much success.

After trading punts to start the game, Marshall moved the down to the Jacksonville 10 yard line when QB Alton Henderson hit Raijon Sims for a 33 yard gain.  The Mavs then hit paydirt to take a 7-0 lead with 2:20 left in the opening quarter.

The Maverick offense went into a funk on their next two possessions with an interception and a fumble that killed promising drives.

Marshall found the endzone again just before the intermission to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room.

Henderson found Sims again early in the third quarter with a beautiful 54 yards pass for a 21-0 lead with 9:37 remaining in the third.

The offense was finding their groove after yet another punt by the Indians to increase the lead to 28-0 late in the third.

Another interception killed yet another good Maverick drive, keeping the game at 28-0.

Sophomore RB Keyunta Lias wrapped up the scoring for the night with an electrifying 67 yard scamper to make it 35-0 with 6:06 left in the game.

The Maverick defense held Jacksonville to 133 total yards on the night.  The Indians had only 46 yards passing.  Running back Didier Mares, who is one of the top backs in district 7-5A only had 65 yards.

Mav QB Alton Henderson was 5-9 for 143 with a touchdown and 2 interceptions.

RB Lias had 147 yards on on 12 carries and 2 touchdowns.

RB Isaiah Bush had 100 yards on 16 carries and a score.

Marshall finished the night with 431 total yards.

The Mavericks improve to (5-2) on the season and more importantly (2-1) in district 7-5A play.

Jacksonville falls to (1-6) and (0-3).

Marshall will now travel to Nacogdoches to take on the Dragons in another key district game.

Nacogdoches is (1-2) in district play and (3-4) for the season.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Dragon Stadium.
